The Lunatics are on the Loose... European FLUXUS Festivals 1962–1977 is the first exhibition that showcases the festivals that the FLUXUS art movement organized in the 1960s and 70s.
The FLUXUS art movement, a movement under the leadership of George Maciunas that included the mixing of music, theater, design, visual arts and literature was alive in the 1960s and 70s in major cities such as Paris, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, London, New York, and Prague. The movement included festivals where artists, composers and designers took park in radical, even shocking performances that included destroying musical instruments or incorporating ordinary daily activities into their performances or “happenings”. The exponents of the FLUXUS movement, a movement that still continues to this day in the art world, were seeking to evade traditional perceptions of art and wished to find new forms of expression. Prague became a center of FLUXUS festivals under the guidance of Director of FLUXUS East, Czech artist Milan Knížák. Even though Prague was under the influence of the Iron Curtain, FLUXUS was welcomed by artists and a broad audience. The Lunatics are on the Loose. European FLUXUS Festivals 1962 – 1977 is the first of its kind here in Prague; this interactive exhibition that is at the National Gallery's Veletržní Palace, guides visitors through the history of FLUXUS via the most important festivals held. The exhibition is from October 1, 2014 - January 4, 2015. For further information, please visit www.ngprague.cz.
