Unknown author

In the case of applied arts – i.e. antiques – the phenomenon of unknown author is more than frequent. The author of a particular design usually was a craftsman whose social status was rather low. While medieval creators are, at best, known from the records of guilds, Renaissance brought along some exceptions when the author was a court craftsman enjoying equal prestige as court artists.

More common products intended for bourgeois clientele usually were serial products which were sometimes signed or marked, but often by a mark of an individual workshop or manufacture – which again does not help much in identifying author of the design. In the case of porcelain manufactures, for example, we often know authors of the designs or the names of the particular top painters on the bases of extensive and subsequently published research of written sources. The producer sometimes also placed signature of an author on its products, but only if it was name whose renown could increase interest in the product and add to its exclusivity.

During the 19th century, serial mass production gradually came to the fore, and the authors of the designs naturally remained anonymous. The end of the 19th century witnessed new interest in high-quality craftsmanship work in reaction to the soulless serial production. Even architects began to be involved in designing items of applied arts in the effort to furnish the designed buildings by high-quality equipment. In that case, the author was presented on the products which increased their marketability. During the 20th century, the designers were also often presented if they enjoyed general respect. Signatures appeared, for example, on porcelain. Significant authors of designs are usually moreover presented in the promotion materials of the companies. It can be said in general, however, that even a top quality design can be in most cases merely attributed to an unknown author.
