Ron Arad

Ron Arad

The designer, artist and architect of Israeli origin eventually came to live and work mainly in London. He settled there in 1974 when he enrolled at the local Architectural Association. In 1981, Arad and Caroline Thorman established the design studio One Off Limited and later, in 1989, the office for design and architecture, Ron Arad Associates. Arad not only excels as a unique artist but also as a pedagogue to a new generation of designers. Between 1994 and 1997, he lectured design at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna and presently teaches product design at the London Royal College of Art. Arad’s work is characteristic of an unceasing experimenting with materials as steel, glass, concrete, aluminum and polyamide and of treating these in an almost sculptural way in order to arrive at interesting forms and surface effects. Both his furniture and architecture, however, often are of biomorphic forms which he variously rewinds, twists and bends so as to achieve dynamic effects and combinations of light and motion. Arad’s unique designs of furniture which is far too often closer to sculptures than armchairs, chairs, bookcases and tables, wipe off the differences between applied and free art. But even though they resemble objects of art, they are always functional and are mainly responsible for the fact that Ron Arad can today rank himself to jet set in the field of contemporary design. His limited studio works represent numerous world-famous brands as, amongst many others, Kartell, Vitra, Moroso, Alessi and Cappellini. His impressive works for architecture worth mentioning are, for example, the Design Museum in Israel, the Hotel Puerta America in Madrid, the Selfridges Technology Hall in London and the Israeli Tel Aviv Opera.
