Jan Čapek

Jan Čapek graduated from the field Cutting and Engraving Precious Stones at the High School of Decorative Arts in Turnov and later from the studios Metal and Jewelry and Product Design at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. In between, he spent two years in the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain at the Institute of Art Culture, affiliated to the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem, and one year in the Studio of Industrial Design at the British Hallam University in Sheffield. During his studies, the gifted designer moreover left for a two year’s scholarship in New York where he cut precious stones in a professional studio Stastny Lapidary for such big names in the field as, for example, Tiffany&Co and Harry Winston. More successes were fast to come: 1st place in the competition of students’ design at the SIBO fair (in collaboration with the Czech Republic Designcenter; 2000), finalist in the international competition Gas de France / Jeunes Flammes in Paris (2003), 1st place in the Czech-Slovak round of the competition Electrolux Design Lab – Prague (2004) and 2nd place in its New York world finale a year later (2005), the award Designer of the Year in the competition Best of Dolce Vita, announced by a prestigious Czech magazine of the same name (2004 and 2005), the award Selected Excellent Design in the finale of the world Charmant International Design Competition in Japan (2006) and, last but not least, 2nd and 3rd place in the competition Czech Grand Design in 2006 and, respectively, 2007 as well as the same nomination for the year of 2008. Čapek’s designs of PET bottles for the Karlovarské minerální vody [Carlsbad Mineral Waters] company plus his chairs Clean Mesh and Polygon and his wash machine Washman for Electrolux rank to his most highly appraised and most well-known objects both from the view of the professional and layman public.
