A.R. Penck |
A. R. Penck (Ralf Winkler) was born in Dresden in the now-defunct German Democratic Republic, and his work is part of the wave of neo-expressive painting. Penck’s work became well-known in the West as early as the 1970s and 1980s and was displayed at the major exhibition New Art in Tate Gallery in 1983. Penck made a name for himself with his paintings and neo-primitivist depictions of human figures and other totemic forms. Although less-known, Penck’s sculptures employ the same primitive themes as his paintings. The artist mostly uses common materials such as wood, bottles, cardboard boxes, cans or tinfoil. His sculptures have symbolic anthropomorphic forms. Penck’s artwork is represented in many world’s major collections. He lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
