Skrepl’s expressive painting oeuvre has always escaped the established trends of Czech artistic scene. Its bright color palette and choice of somewhat asocial subjects result in inimitable tension and its sophisticated character departs from Skrepl’s background in theory – for the artist didn’t graduate from painting itself but from its history. Paintings by Vladimír Skrepl well match the theory developed by Vilem Flusser, philosopher of Czech origin, as to the frightfulness of the impossible, the sphere of pure terror and the revelation of the sacred. Skrepl’s painting style is so remote from what we are, “aesthetically“, used to that it may cause us a shock. It never reaches the vague sphere of the commonplace, since the artist himself never lets it fall down so deep. On the contrary, every new painting brings along the new mighty “big bang“, and the viewer is panic-stricken again. The panic is not only caused by the wild (and repeatedly surprising) painting style, but also by the painting subjects, for the latter reflect all the known traumas one can experience if he or she realizes the dread of the human fate. In his recent paintings, Skrepl uses more impasto, more flowing brushstrokes and more hectic color scale. The artist is also invited to prestigious international exhibitions. In 2007, he received the Jiří Kovanda Prize, awarded by young artists and art theoreticians to their best role models.
